The idea

This is how we picture it

The capitals of the old Austro-Hungarian empire in a single arc: Gothic Prague, little Bratislava, thermal Budapest and imperial Vienna. They share a history and are nothing alike, which is exactly the point.

This is a trip idea, not a fixed package: every version is designed around the person living it.

Days 1-4

Prague, the one left intact

Three nights: the castle and St Vitus Cathedral, Charles Bridge, the Jewish Quarter and the astronomical clock striking the hour with theatre.

Prague rewards the early riser: Charles Bridge at seven in the morning is a different monument.

Day 4

Bratislava, the short stop

On the way to Budapest, a few hours in the Slovak capital: the white castle above the Danube and a centre you can walk in an afternoon.

It is the stopover nobody expects and many are grateful for: small, cheap and without queues.

Bratislava Castle

Days 5-6

Budapest and the Danube

The Parliament from the river, the Fisherman’s Bastion, the Central Market and an afternoon in the thermal baths, which here are a habit and not a luxury.

Budapest is two cities with a river in between: Buda watches, Pest lives.

Budapest

Days 7-8

Imperial Vienna

Schönbrunn Palace, the opera, the Hofburg and a finale with Sachertorte in a marble café with waiters in waistcoats.

Vienna is the only one of the four that still lives as in its golden age. The café with live music is not for tourists: it is the house’s own.

Hofburg Palace, Vienna

A whole empire fitted into these gardens, and you can still see the gesture.

Belvedere Palace, Vienna
