Days 1-2
Cairo and the pyramids
Giza at dawn, when the pyramids are still silent. The Egyptian Museum, the Khan el-Khalili bazaar and a first night watching the Sphinx lit up.
Giza sits right up against the city, and seeing it up close is more surprising than the photo. At dawn the site is almost empty and the scale imposes itself without a sound. The Egyptian Museum asks for time: what is inside cannot be seen in passing.

Days 3-5
Cruise on the Nile
From Luxor to Aswan on a cruise that takes its time: the temple of Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, Edfu and Kom Ombo seen from the water, like travellers always have.
The cruise is the trip within the trip: you move while you sleep and every morning there is a different temple on the bank. Karnak is walked among columns that block out the sky.

Abu Simbel and the return
A dawn excursion to Abu Simbel, the temple they moved stone by stone to save it from the water. A last night in Aswan and the flight home with sand in your shoes.
Abu Simbel is seen at dawn because that is when the light enters the mountain. The whole temple was cut up and moved in the sixties so the dam would not cover it, and the seam can still be made out if you know where to look.
