Two rival capitals and a city of three cultures in between
The idea
This is how we picture it
Madrid and Barcelona have argued for a century over which is the city, and the way to settle it is to see them back to back, with Toledo in the middle as referee: a medieval city where three religions lived side by side, and which can be walked in full.
This is a trip idea, not a fixed package: every version is designed around the person living it.
Days 1-3
Madrid, from museum to tavern
The Prado and the Reina Sofía, the Retiro, the Royal Palace and the taverns of La Latina, where dinner is a string of sharing plates that keep arriving on their own.
Madrid stays up late: the city is designed so the night never ends, and that too is heritage.
Gran Vía, Madrid
Day 4
Toledo, the city of three cultures
Half an hour by train: the cathedral, the Synagogue of El Tránsito, the Mosque of Cristo de la Luz and the alleys where El Greco lived.
Toledo is a history lesson without a blackboard: church, synagogue and mosque three hundred metres from one another.
Days 5-8
Barcelona, Gaudí by the sea
The Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, the Gothic Quarter and the Ramblas down to the port, with a free afternoon for Barceloneta beach.
Gaudí cannot be explained: you walk into the Sagrada Familia and the light does the rest. It is worth setting aside the whole morning.
